The Law Offices of Brian D. Witzer are now accepting clients who have been injured by the medication Reglan (generic name, metoclopramide). You may already know someone who has taken Reglan. If you’re not familiar with the drug, Reglan is a benzamide-class medication used to treat many different gastrointestinal and esophageal conditions. The drug is very versatile in how it can be used: by patients with diabetes to aid digestion, before clinical or surgical procedures to clear the gastrointestinal track, to prevent nausea and vomiting, and, surprisingly, sometimes to treat migraines. There has also been a recent trend of prescribing Reglan to pregnant mothers as a treatment for morning sickness.
Despite its many uses, however, Reglan comes with a serious risk: patients who use Reglan for a prolonged time, or even patients who only take the drug once (but who have a previously undetected sensitivity to the drug), may develop a devastating neurological condition called “tardive dyskinesia.” You can recognize the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia by an uncontrollable shaking or twitching of the hands and limbs, repetitive chewing motions or the tongue poking and moving uncontrollably in the mouth, and in severe cases, difficulty walking, swallowing, or even breathing. Patients who are elderly, diabetic, or who have impaired kidney functioning have a greater risk for developing tardive dyskinesia from taking Reglan. Tardive dyskinesia may heal and go away naturally, but many times, it becomes a life-altering permanent injury.
If you or a loved one have taken Reglan and then suffered from tardive dyskinesia, or any other side effect that you believe came from taking Reglan, please contact Mr. Witzer’s office for a free, confidential evaluation of your potential case.
